It seems as though there will be no shortage of good films to see in Fall 2009. Disney is coming out with two family movies, The Christmas Carol and The Princess and the Frog, as well as 3D versions of Toy Story and Toy Story 2. Sandra Bullock has a few comedies that will be released, and during October, there will be a multitude of suspense and thriller movies available to satisfy viewer's Halloween cravings. Here is a look at a few of the upcoming Fall 2009 movies that are sure to please.

All About Steve is a comedy starring Sandra Bullock, Bradley Cooper and Thomas Haden Church. Bullock plays an eccentric crossword puzzle constructor who falls for a handsome newsman after just one date, and the follows him cross country. Bullock rarely disappoints, and this romantic comedy looks fun and endearing. This film will be in theaters on Friday, September 4, 2009.

Another promising comedy film for Fall 2009 is Couples Retreat. The premise for this movie is that four couples go together to a tropical island retreat; one couple is there because they are facing divorce; the others go for vacation but soon learn that participation in all couples' therapy activities is required for all resort guests whether they like it or not. The film stars Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman and Jean Reno; it will be in movie theaters on Friday, October 9, 2009.

Those who prefer something darker will love Shutter Island, which is based on the 2004 novel Mystic River by Dennis Lehane. This film stars Leonardo Di Caprio, who plays a US marshall who is investigating the disappearance of woman who escapes from a mental hospital for the criminally insane. Ben Kingsley, Mark Ruffalo and Michelle Williams round out the cast. This film will be released on Friday, October 2, 2009.

Disney movies are usually big box office draws, and the November 25, 2009 release of The Princess and the Frog will be no exception. This new animated Disney film promises the 'true story' of the well-known fairy tale. Actors Anika Noni Rose, Keith David, John Goodman and Oprah Winfrey provide some of the voices for the film.

Although Charles Dicken's A Chrismas Carol is one of the most popular and widely known Christmas stories that has already been made into films in the past, Disney is releasing its own, 3D version on Friday, November 6, 2009. Jim Carey plays Ebenezer Scrooge, the old miser who is visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve as they attempt to change his ways before it is too late. Cary Elwes, Colin Firth, Bob Hoskins and Robin Wright Penn also star in this film.

Ever since Super Bowl XXX, movie trailers have gained as much attention during this event as have the commercials which are expected at times to be even more entertaining than the game. That year was when Roland Emmerich's “Independence Day” was about to be unleashed on us. Many of us had already seen the teaser trailer in theaters, but seeing it during a commercial break made its impact seem all the more potent. We're not just talking about when those aliens blew up the White House mind you. The tagline that finished up the TV spot seemed to burn into our memories completely:

“Enjoy the Super Bowl. It may be your last.”

After that year, movie studios went out of their way to pimp out their upcoming summer blockbusters as the Super Bowl offered one of the biggest audiences one could ever hope to find on television. It was never a guarantee of success for a film, but it always got everyone's attention and got interest strongly generated. With Super Bowl XLIV however, the number of movie trailers had decreased though which was a bit of a surprise. There wasn't even a TV spot for “Iron Man 2,” one of the most anticipated movies of 2010. This was especially surprising since the spot they ran for the original was a big success.

Still, there were a few movies to talk about, some of which are scheduled to open this month in February. Here's a recap and a review of the trailers shown during the anticipated commercial breaks of Super Bowl XLIV:

The Last Airbender – Written, Produced, and Directed by M. Night Shyamalan

Whereas they usually save the best for last, this Super Bowl started off with the cream of the crop. Originally titled “Avatar: The Last Airbender” (some other movie you may have heard of laid claim to that first word in the title), the look of this movie from this TV spot is amazing, and it doesn't at all feel like your typical M. Night Shyamalan movie. Actually, that would be a plus considering that his last few films (“Lady In The Water” and “The Happening”) were critical and commercial disasters. And please M. Night, NO TWIST ENDINGS WITH THIS ONE! ENOUGH ALREADY!

“TheLast Airbender” is a live action adaptation of the first season of the popular animated show. But after watching this trailer for it, I'm pretty confident that it will attract more than the show's devoted fans!

Robin Hood – Directed by Ridley Scott, Starring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett

Almost as impressive, Ridley Scott's “Robin Hood” appears to have much more of a rough edge than the last big screen interpretation of this classic hero, “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” (or “Robin Hood: Men In Tights” if you want to include that). This upcoming summer film is set to be released on May 14th, and it re-teams Director Scott with his Oscar winning “Gladiator” actor Russell Crowe as Mr. Hood himself.

The scope of the trailer is visually impressive as is any Ridley Scott movie, and some of the titles in it imply that the story takes place before those famous events that occurred in Sherwood Forest. That makes this particular “Robin Hood” all the more interesting to me in that it won't necessarily be the same old story.

In addition, we also have fellow Oscar winner Cate Blanchett as Lady Marian, so this movie looks to pack quite the cast. My only complaint about this trailer is that I wish it was a little longer.

The Wolfman – Directed by Joe Johnston, Starring Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Hugo Weaving, and Emily Blunt

After various delays, this film will finally see the light of day this Friday, February 12th. I have seen numerous TV spots for “The Wolfman” over the past few weeks, and most had my expectations in check due to the obviousness of the CGI effects being used. Still, the hand transforming does look painfully creepy! This film also boasts quite the cast which hopefully will be worth the price of admission alone.

Of all the TV spots I have seen for “The Wolfman” so far, this is easily the most impressive and makes the movie look quite good. The trailer being shown in theaters though is much stronger and gives more of a reason to check it out once it has been released (or should we say, unleashed).

The movie was directed by Joe Johnston who has also helmed “Jumanji,” “The Rocketeer,” Hidalgo,” and “Jurassic Park 3″ (oh joy) to name a few. A mixed bag of a trailer, but it still makes the film look interesting.

Shutter Island – Directed by Martin Scorsese, Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Max Von Sidow, and Michelle Williams

Scorsese's first movie since his Rolling Stones IMAX concert movie “Shine A Light” was supposed to be released in 2009, but because of the “stiff Oscar competition,” it was delayed until this year which was kind of annoying. Like “The Wolfman,” this is also set to be released very soon in February and has already had many TV spots thrust onto our television screens.

From the various trailers and TV spots (including this one), this looks to be quite the brilliant movie we come to expect from Martin Scorsese. Of course, the spot brings up the fact that this is from the director of “Raging Bull” and “The Departed” (no one ever seems to mention “The King of Comedy”) which may take away from this movie more than it helps it.

“Shutter Island” is based on the novel by Dennis Lehane whose books have inspired other great movies like “Mystic River” and “Gone Baby Gone.” This adaptation looks to have a number of things going for it, so hopefully it will not be the victim of high expectations.

Alice In Wonderland – Directed by Tim Burton, Starring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter

Walt Disney Pictures has their title stamped all over this one, but this TV spot indeed makes it look like what it is, a Tim Burton film. This one certainly does not look to be your typical Disney faire which makes me look forward to it all the more. The focal point of this trailer is of course Johnny Depp who is working with Burton for the umpteenth time, and his take on the Mad Hatter looks to be insanely creative. We also get to see Burton's main squeeze Helena Bonham Carter as the diminutive Red Queen whose size is nothing compared to her reign of terror.

The only problem with this trailer is that you never get to see much of Alice herself. Considering the movie is about Alice and her journeys, you'd figure it would feature her just a tad more. Mia Wasikowska is playing Alice in this version, and she is a relative unknown which would explain why Disney is keen in selling this movie on Depp's star power more than anything else. Either that or the villains tend to be much more interesting than the hero or heroine.

Still, this does look to be good, and I look forward to seeing it when it comes out in March.

The Pacific – Produced by Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman

Ok, I'm cheating a little bit on this one because it's not for a movie, but for a miniseries for HBO that is premiering in March. Those “Band of Brothers” producers Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman are doing their World War II thing again, and it makes me wonder how many stories from this war are left to tell.

Still, the look of this miniseries is amazingly epic, and it makes me want to reactivate my subscription to HBO which I was foolish enough to drop despite my affection for “Real Time with Bill Maher.” This one is said to focus on the United States Marine Corps's actions in the Pacific Theater of Operations, and Stephen Ambrose is serving as a project consultant.

While the look of “The Pacific” may bring back unpleasant memories for some of Michael Bay's “Pearl Harbor,” you cannot doubt the level of commitment that Spielberg and Hanks put into these miniseries, and I am eager to check this one out.

The Back-Up Plan – Directed by Alan Poul, Starring Jennifer Lopez and Alex O'Loughlin

I have to give this one some credit for the way it started. With this batch of trailers, I was hoping for a little more creativity in terms of subverting the usual format of a TV spot. This one starts off with a warning label of how what you are about to see may shock you. But then this trailer devolves into what you would think would be a commercial for one of the many CBS sitcoms being aired right now. I wasn't even sure of what was going on as it progressed with women looking like they were giving birth in bathtubs and blow up swimming pools. Then Jennifer Lopez came one, and I knew that this is going to be another one of her romantic comedies. You all know by now how I feel about that genre, and I don't care that “Dear John” just beat out “Avatar” at the box office.

Regardless of the fan base that Jennifer Lopez still has, I am not rushing out to see this one.

Prince of Persia: The Sands Of Time – Directed by Mike Newell, Starring Jake Gyllenhaal

It feels like Jerry Bruckheimer practically owns CBS with all the hit shows he has produced for the network. So naturally, the network has to let him promote one of his summer blockbusters during the Super Bowl. This one is an adaptation of a popular video game, and it stars Gyllenhaal as Dastank, a street urchin who ends up being chosen by the king as his heir after showing heroism in battle.

The special effects in the trailer reek of CGI, so I can't say I was all that impressed over what was shown. Jake looks to be doing a British accent for this part, so let's just hope that he doesn't fall into that trap Kevin Costner fell into all those years ago.

I don't have much else to say about this trailer other than the fact that these lines that Gyllenhaal utters will be stuck in my mind until the movie is released:

“Give me the dagger!”

Maybe if I knew more about the video game I would be more excited about this, but with Bruckheimer, we can always expect something that is anything but boring.
